International Women’s Day is March 8 this year, and arrangements are in full swing. This isn’t a romantic holiday; it’s a special occasion to mark the women in your life who make things happen. From suffragists to teachers, pioneers to food bank volunteers, there is bound to be someone in your life who is a hero.
We know that most of those heroes are unsung; therefore, it’s up to you to acknowledge their contributions and send flowers for International Women’s Day 2013. Sophisticated, elegant flowers such as tropical flowers are a fine way to surprise and impress the women in your life. It doesn’t take much to let someone know you noticed the fine work they were doing and thank them for it.
International Women’s Day started in 1908 with a large march of women through the streets of New York. They wanted equal rights, pay and suffrage, and women around the world are still fighting for the same, in varying degrees, today. The first National Women’s Day was in 1909, and the first International Women’s Day was declared in 1910.
Every year, the International Women’s Day committee comes up with a theme for its many events and observances. The 2013 theme is The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum. It is a celebration of how far women have come with a nod to the fact that there’s still work to be done. You can go to the International Women’s Day website to find events near you that celebrate that theme.
No matter how you celebrate International Women’s Day in 2013, we hope you will spare a moment on March 8 to reflect on this year’s theme and maybe get inspired by the women in your life. DaFlores is there if you need us, and we’re happy to provide thank-you flowers for the women in your life for all the work they do.
